In his book ‘The World is Flat’, Thomas L Friedman
explains how this and other social and technological shifts have contributed to
what previously has been termed ‘Globalisation’ – the opportunity for businesses
to participate and compete in a global economy.
Friedman suggests
that the development of globalisation has reached a new era: ‘Globalisation 3.0’
began in the year 2000. Today, groups and even individuals have the power to
collaborate and compete Globally. The world flattened first for countries, then
for corporations and now for you.
In a flat world work
will continue on the other side of the planet whilst you sleep. Advances in
technology, specifically communications, will allow jobs to be done by whoever
can do those best. Information can be taken by anyone and built upon from
anywhere in the world.
The future is being
created faster than ever before.
This is exciting for
entrepreneurs but may have repercussions for society. Will your job be secure?
What will the world be like for the next generation? What, if any, is the
significance of 9/11/2001?
