LIFE SCIENCES

Life Sciences (Biotechnology) are generally regarded as the foundation for a next generation of high technology businesses that will be crucial to Australia’s future economic health.

quotesbioquote.jpgATP Innovations gratefully acknowledges the DRSD for promoting and supporting the development of Biotechnology industry in NSW through its BioFirst strategy for biotechnology, and for its proactive participation in developing a vibrant cluster of Biotech businesses with ATP Innovations.

Biotech-based businesses generally have higher barriers to entry than IT businesses, and much longer lead times for product development. In addition they generally require stronger support in terms of scientific infrastructure. However, they also have the potential to generate extremely high value products, to lead on to substantial business activities with a manufacturing base, and to enhance the competitiveness of existing Australian industry.

Many Biotech businesses develop within the setting of Universities or Research Institutes where they can find access to laboratories, expertise and infrastructure to support them in their early stages. As their products move closer to market they may require more substantial facilities, or may wish to move out of a University setting to develop their independence and commercial focus.

The ATP Innovations through its unique partnership with four of Australia’s leading universities forms an important point of contact between these institutions, and a potential focus for coordinated development in areas of strategic opportunity including biotechnology.

The NSW State Government’s BioFirst strategy for biotechnology sets the scene for growth of the industry, supporting the commercialisation of start-up ventures in this sector. The Federal Government has also implemented a suite of initiatives to support the growth of the biotechnology sector in Australia through its ‘Backing Australia’s Ability’ program. The time is now right to seize the opportunity to build the sector in NSW. The ATP Innovations seeks to contribute strongly to the success of both of these initiatives.

The ATP Innovations provides and important focal point to bring together emerging biotechnology enterprises emerging from public sector institutions to develop biotechnology-based businesses in NSW.

ATP Innovations supports a growing number of companies working in the life sciences space.

ATP Innovations - building biobusinesses

ATP Innovations has developed and refined an integrated suite of business development programs. BizStart is designed to turn a business idea into a realistic business plan and BizConnect provides a broad range of commercialisation services. Both programs are underpinned by the bizNetClub, which enhances business knowledge through access to learning networks.

ATP Innovations commercialisation process and business support services are based on a simple maturity model that leads to:
Creation of a realistic business plan.
  •  Market validation of the products or processes.
  •  Securing initial business deals.
  •  Business expansion.
  •  Graduation from the program.

Development of the ATP Innovations BioFirst Biotechnology Precinct

To drive this, ATP Innovations in partnership with the NSW State Government’s BioFirst Biotechnology Program has established a physical biotech precinct that can house and support start-up companies in state of the art laboratory facilities. The precinct has been designed to incorporate flexible client arrangements and provide core infrastructure that enables companies to set up their operations as quickly as possible. The facilities can house companies requiring wet lab facilities as well as those working in the biomedical devices, biomaterials and bioinformatics arenas.

Please see the related items below on the biotechnology precinct facilities and services.
