Secura Shield Launches the SC-220 e-Seal at RFID Journal Live in Las Vegas
Taking a big step to open up the American and European market, Secura Shield has launched their new product at the premier RFID exhibition in the
Mark Roberti, founder and editor of RFID Journal which puts on the exhibition has confirmed that the 6th annual exhibition is the biggest yet with over 175 leading providers of RFID hardware, software and services exhibiting and over 3000 pre-registered attendees. "That tells me the industry is strong, and that companies are starting to understand how they can use RFID products and services to improve the way they do business."
The CEO of Secura Shield, Jonathan Elcombe relished the challenge of launching the SC-220 at such a prestigious show. “The team worked hard to get the product to market and it’s paid off handsomely. We received countless positive comments on the innovative design, the functionality and even the vibrant orange colour. It’s generated a lot of interest as we’re the only player in this space”.
Designed to provide affordable container security and enhanced supply chain visibility the SC-220 combines the best of both worlds; a high strength mechanical bolt with an EPCglobal Gen 2 compliant passive radio frequency identification (RFID) tag to provide an electronic tamper-evident intermodal container e-Seal operating in the global 860-960 MHz UHF band.
Currently garnering considerable attention from transport companies and high-end consumer goods manufacturers, the SC-220 e-Seal promises a way to reduce theft, streamline receiving and illuminate the journey from warehouse to warehouse.
The Secura Shield e-Seal has also expedited Customs processes as demonstrated in a successful pilot with TNT and Thai Customs and Secura Shield believes the launch of the new product will facilitate greater business opportunities across
Fully utilising the co-located EPCglobal Joint Action Group (JAG) meeting, Secura Shield is now a member of several Task and Work groups within the Transportation and Logistics Services umbrella, thereby ensuring that an Australian RFID supplier is a part of global Standards development.
“GS1 and EPCglobal have become the foremost Standards Association for barcoding and electronic product codes and without them the strength of electronic based worldwide trade would falter. Standards are essential if RFID is to grow so Secura Shield is proud to be on the ground floor, helping it happen,” says Mr Elcombe.

NSW Enterprise and LX Innovations - MAKING INNOVATION A BUSINESS SUCCESS
LX Innovations is a contract electronics design company, specialising in the design of embedded systems and wireless technologies. LX is an innovative product design house which can rapidly develop new products and commercialise ideas. Simon Blyth, a participant in the 2004 NSW Enterprise Workshop leads the company.
Simon entered the Workshop to improve his understanding of business. Throughout the Workshop program, participants are challenged to take a step back to look at their project on a macro level.
Commenting on his Workshop experience Simon said, “The Workshop provided a practical and start-up focussed program that taught us the nuts and bolts of business in real life as opposed to just the theory.”
The research and planning involved in the workshop under the guidance of a mentor helped Simon learn how to prepare a solid business plan. Simon added, “The lectures, advisory board sessions and mentoring challenged our thinking at all levels and helped to develop a strong business foundation. It was also very exciting and encouraging to meet and work alongside other likeminded entrepreneurs.”
After completing the Workshop, Simon finished his studies at the
LX Innovations has evolved significantly. Simon and his team have been recognised nationally and globally for their innovative designs, business strategy and research. Awards include the Institute for Engineering and Technology competition (IET), National Shell Science Awards and the Premier’s Award for Excellence. Commenting on his team, he said, “Members of the LX team are passionate and innovative when it comes to turning revolutionary ideas into commercial products”.
Examples of their work include the VIPER, an ultrasonic guidance device developed to assist visually impaired individuals to “see” in much the same way as bats detect the distance of objects. Other nifty ideas include LX Innovation’s Line Guidance System (LGS) driver fatigue safety system uses, which monitors the position and behaviour of a vehicle relative to the road, and uses speed and indicator status to detect signs of driver fatigue and dangerous situations. The LGS operates by gently alerting the driver via a vibrating seat cushion.
The next NSW Enterprise Workshop entrepreneurial and business development program starts on 25 July. Contact 9209 4796 or e-mail succeed@enterpriseworkshop.com.au to register for an information session.
Client Profile: Innovative Sorting Solutions
Overview
Innovative Sorting Solutions is a newly formed Australian company specialising in the design and development of equipment for handling and sorting of test-tubes in blood laboratories.
Development engineers of Innovative Sorting Solutions are making best use of over 30 years of field experience in maintaining and servicing various brands of equipment in laboratories across Australia. This unmatched expertise lead to the selection of the most efficient mechanical/electronic/software solutions available.
Technology/Products and Services Description
Innovative Sorting Solutions is finalising the development of equipment
allowing for bulk loading of test-tubes and sorting in racks according to
the information recorded on the bar-code and colour of the test-tube
cap. The racks are then carried to their respective destination in the laboratory.
Considering that this operation is now mostly performed manually in laboratories, equipment from Innovative Sorting Solutions reduces dramatically the human intervention in handling and sorting of test-tubes together with their associated cost and risk factors.
However, the modular design of the electronic card and associated software program allows for easy extension to an entire range of handling equipment which are presently under development.
The modular design also facilitates immensely the maintenance aspect of the machine limiting dramatically its down-time. All cards on the machine are fully interchangeable and can be replaced with short notice.

E-Noses Flying High
Imagine a machine that can identify the smell of something and then direct itself to the source of that odour. A new patent by E-Nose Pty Ltd, envisages "flying and crawling noses" that can find what it is you're looking for, by moving the device to its odour source, such as a lifeboat in distress, a stranded motor vehicle, a rotting body or buried explosives.
E-Nose Pty Ltd, located at the Australian Technology Park, Sydney, has discovered a new way to discriminate odours in real time. This also means that air pollutants can now be identified according to their source, instantly and continuously.
“Businesses that are under pressure from EPAs to measure and clean-up their smells are using our E-Noses and our new patented odour identification method to be sure whose odour it is that is raising concern,” CEO of E-Nose Pty Ltd, Dr. Graham Bell, said.
In recent work for the petrochemical industry, E-Nose Pty Ltd proved that the odour drifting off an industrial site came from two sources, depending on the wind direction. In one direction it was the client's odour, but with a slight change in direction it was a neighbouring industry's odour.
"The new method makes us more competitive globally, by giving our customers exactly what they need to know. We have taken international patent protection for the method and are looking at the global markets with greatly increased confidence."
"We are also gaining acceptance by EPAs that our new technology for odour measurement is valid. In addition, our device's output can be expressed in units related to human smell threshold. So we can tell if it is your odour and how far it will be from the source before people can no longer smell it.”
“We have made a quantum leap in measuring and mapping airborne molecules, that are of concern to the public and to pollution-control authorities," Dr Bell said.
E-Nose Pty Ltd has operated at the Australian Technology Park since February 2003 and is a privately owned spin-off from UNSW. E-Nose Pty Ltd consists of a “dream team” of boffins who have “morphed” into entrepreneurs, plus management and financial acumen from ATP-innovations Pty Ltd. “Our relationship with Sydney University and UNSW is one of our great strengths. Our location at the Technology Park near the CBD provides many advantages to us,” he said.
